Instagram for contractors: bio, captions, hashtags and a posting week

Homeowners look up your Instagram before they call, even when they found you somewhere else. Here is how to set it up so that look turns into a message.

For a contractor, Instagram is less a social network than a portfolio that homeowners carry in their pocket. A referral says "use my pool guy", and the first thing the homeowner does is open your profile. In five seconds they decide whether you look like the kind of company that builds what they want. This guide is about winning those five seconds, then turning them into a message.

Your contractor Instagram bio

Your bio has one job: tell a stranger what you build, where, and how to ask for a quote. Skip the slogans.

  • Use a business account so you get the contact buttons and insights.
  • Put the trade in the name field, for example "Blue Ridge Pools | Pool Builder". The name field is searchable; the bio is not.
  • Use your logo or a clean photo of your best job as the profile picture, not a photo of a truck.

The first screen of your grid

Pin three posts to the top of your profile: your three best finished-project videos, ideally one per main service. Below them, the grid should look like a gallery of finished work, with process and tips mixed in. If the top nine squares are stock graphics and holiday posts, the homeowner leaves.

Use Highlights as a menu: one per service (Pools, Spas, Outdoor kitchens), one for reviews, one for process. A homeowner can see your bathroom work without scrolling back two years.

Reels are where new customers find you

Instagram shows Reels to people who do not follow you. Photos mostly go to people who already do. That makes the finished-project video the most important thing you post. A 15 to 30 second vertical video of a reveal, with the town in the caption, can reach thousands of homeowners nearby.

You do not need to film one. Vizzmo turns 8 to 12 handover photos into a vertical video with music and your logo, checked by a person, in 48 hours. The first one is free. The free post maker also turns any single post into a short animated Reel.

Captions that bring messages

  1. Lead with the result: "Bare yard to resort backyard in nine weeks."
  2. Name the place: "Paradise Valley, AZ." Instagram and homeowners both read it.
  3. Name the scope and two materials: "Pebble finish, travertine deck, spa spillover."
  4. One detail only you would know: "We moved the spa three feet so it catches the sunset."
  5. End with one action: "Planning for next summer? Send us a message."

Hashtags for contractors

Use ten to fifteen hashtags: local ones built from your city, a few for the specific job, three or four for your trade, and one or two broad ones. Thirty generic tags bring followers from other countries who will never hire you. The free contractor hashtag generator builds the set for your trade and city.

A posting week that takes an hour

Turning views into quotes

  • Answer every comment and DM within a day. "How much?" is a lead: reply with an offer to quote.
  • Set up saved replies that ask for the town and the project type.
  • Boost your best Reel to homeowners within 20 miles during your busy season.
  • Ask every new client how they found you, and count the ones who say Instagram.

Questions

Is Instagram worth it for contractors?

Yes, mostly as a portfolio. Homeowners check your profile before they call, even when they found you through a referral or Google. Reels also reach local homeowners who do not follow you yet.

What should a contractor's Instagram bio say?

What you build, where, one line of proof such as years in business or a license number, and how to ask for a quote. Put the trade in the name field too, because that field is searchable.

How many hashtags should a contractor use?

Ten to fifteen: local tags for your city, a few for the specific job, three or four for your trade and one or two broad ones.
